Less than forty years after the first Minnesota territory railroad franchises were granted in the mid-1850s. a new transcontinental line, the Pacific Extension of the Great Northern Railway, brought the "steamcar civilization" to a sprawling region from the upper Mississippi Valley to Puget Sound. The eventual proliferation of trains so changed the complexion of the Northwest that a Seattle Chamber of Commerce official was moved to proclaim, "Every rail is the pathway to prosperity. Blest be the tic that binds our hearts and towns with business love."
THE GREAT NORTHERN RAILWAY details the history of this major entrepreneurial enterprise from 1856, when its earliest predecessor received charter authority, to 1970, when the 8,000-mile Great Northern became an integral part of the massive Burlington Northern. Tracing the development of the Great Northern Railway through to its maturation, this book highlights the changes brought on by new economic, political, social, and technological advances.
The first part of THE GREAT NORTHERN
RAILWAY chronicles the railroad's growth throughout the Northwest, stressing especially the work of James Jerome Hill, a former freight forwarder who, with his "associates," turned a small regional company into an important transcontinental operation. The authors examine the railway's early strategies and philosophy, relations with employees, and vigorous campaigns to develop the service area.
In Part Two the authors offer an assessment of the years 1916 to 1970-a period of dramatic transition for the Great Northern and for the railroad industry at large: two world wars and a depression, increasing competition from alternative methods of transportation, rising labor costs and stronger unions, tighter government restrictions, and problems attendant to a mature property. The book closes with the merger, in 1970, of the Great Northern and the Northern Pacific along with jointly held roads to form the Burlington Northern-an almost ten-year battle, decided finally by the Supreme Court.
Informative, meticulously researched, and handsomely illustrated, THE GREAT NORTHERN RAILWAY is a vibrant blend of business, railroad. and regional history reflecting America's heritage.
