FOREWORD
The most important reason behind my interest in "Rocky the Goat" and the mighty Great Northern is its unique freight equipment fleet. GN had a diverse and colorful fleet of rolling stock, and simply stated; GN equipment is interesting to observe and model. In general, I like the colorful railroad freight cars and cabooses of the 1950s and 1960s. GN had a vast fleet of red cabooses that has remained a mythical reminder of railroading from the past. This combination of variety in equipment and colorful paint schemes are the fundamental reasons behind my interest in the Great Northern Railway.
GN operated during an era when cabooses were part of each train, maintenance equipment was on the rails and produce came to us in colorful refrigerated railroad cars. At the turn of the twenty-first century, cabooses on freight trains are just a memory, maintenance equipment is basically highway-bound, refrigerated transport is mostly in bland containers and truck trailers are on flat cars. The GN era of railroading is long gone and we are the lesser for it.
The subject of this volume is the Great Northern caboose and maintenance fleet, along with the freight cars of the Western Fruit Express Company. This book is the final of a three volume series featuring the Great Northern Railway equipment fleet. The purpose of the project is to create a comprehensive collection of colorful photographs of GN rolling stock and equipment that existed during the late 1960s. The first book, "Great Northern Equipment Color Pictorial, Book One - Box Cars and Stock Cars", and the second volume, "Great Northern Equipment Color Pictorial, Book Two - Freight Cars" covers other types of GN freight equipment.
This book focuses on Great Northern equipment that existed immediately prior to the creation of the Burlington Northern in March of 1970. The GN was merged into the BN along with the CB&Q, NP and SP&S. I have attempted to include all types of cabooses and Western Fruit Express cars that existed at that time. The maintenance equipment section is an overview that focuses on the most common cars along with noteworthy unique cars. I have not attempted to cover every type of maintenance equipment in the GN fleet. The majority of maintenance cars were unique and an entire book could be dedicated to the subject.
A vast majority of information that is presented in this book is from primary source material, such as Great Northern Railway Company records, data from the Association of American Railroads (AAR), and the railroad industry journals, Railway Age and Modern Railroads. The Great Northern Railway Company records are archived at the Minnesota Historical Society and this collection includes a vast array of annual reports, expense reports, operation records, diagrams, plans, anecdotal reports, etc. Information was also gathered from individuals who worked on the railroad and other individuals with first hand source information.
The term "car series" is used frequently in this book and it refers to a specific group of cars purchased or built as one unit and referenced by a number series. The significance of using the term "car series" is so a group of cars can be referred to by a point of origin; when the cars were built, the group was assigned a number series.
I have thoroughly enjoyed writing the three volumes in this series. Throughout the project I have been fortunate to meet helpful individuals who have assisted me in finding photographs, information and other resources. The four-year effort has enhanced my knowledge of the Great Northern (and railroads in general) and I am pleased that I decided to pursue the project.
