DUST JACKET INTRODUCTION: For more than 75 years, the Great Northern Railway stood out as one of America's prominent rail systemsand one of the nation's premiere transportation icons was the GN's Empire Builder. Named for the moniker given the railroad's founder, James J. Hill, the Empire Builder was renowned for its orange motive power and observation cars that allowed passengers to watch the scenic northern tier landscape pass by on the way from Chicago to Seattle and Portland.
Written by Montana native Bill Yenne, Great Northern Empire Builder provides railfans with a definitive account of the evolution of GN passenger rail service from 1929 through today's Amtrak service on the route, as well as the story behind the development of GN itself. Yenne also explains the role that Glacier National Park played in the business of Great Northern Railway and vice versa, and of course, includes the evolution of Rocky the Mountain Goat mascot.
Archival photography, vintage brochures, and spectacular modern photography supplement the fascinating tale about this remarkable passenger train system.
About the Author
Bill Yenne is the San Francisco-based author of more than three dozen books on transportation and historical topics. He is a member of the American Society of Journalists and Authors, and of the Great Northern Railway Historical Society. He grew up across the tracks from Belton, Montana, within earshot of the mournful wail of the locomotives on the Great Northern's main line where his uncle, Clyde Yenne, served as an engineer for many years. An avid rail-rider to this day, Yenne fondly remembers his first trip across the continent from Montana to Minneapolis for Christmas 1953 on the Great Northern's Empire Builder.
