About 6 o'clock on the rainy morning of April 12, 1862, William Fuller, conductor of a Confederate supply train, watched in stunned disbelief as his locomotive, the General, and three empty box cars disappeared around a sharp bend of Georgia's Western & Atlantic R.R.
Aboard the stolen train were 20 Union soldiers and one civilian, led by a 33-year-old Union spy named James J. Andrews. Their mission was to sabotage the railroad-a vital Confederate artery of supply -and thereby end the war by one bold stroke.
For nearly five hours and ninety miles conductor Fuller chased the raiders, using a hand car and three locomotives, finally driving them into the wilds of the Cumberland foothills.
Said a prominent Atlanta daily at the time: "We doubt if the victory of Manassas or Corinth were worth as much as the frustration of this coup d'etat."
Eight of the raiders escaped, six were exchanged for Confederate prisoners, and eight were hung. All the raiders, except the two civilians, were also awarded the first Congressional Medals of Honor ever struck.
