In appearance it looked like an 0.4.0 in which the locomotive and tender were mounted on a single frame with the coal and water carried by the rear bogie. Similar designs were brought out a few years later by the Midland and North Eastern Railways, but in 1872 Samuel W. Johnson, when Locomotive Superintendent of the Great Eastern Railway designed the first 0.4.4T with tanks on either side of the boiler and inside framing for all wheels.
