PREFACE
It is no surprise that the Brooklyn Bridge ranks high on everyone's list of wonders of the modern world. It is an immense, complex, and awesome structure. It is functional and beautiful. It has stood for one hundred years and links two boroughs of a great city-and the past with the present.
But the Brooklyn Bridge is also a symbol of the American spirit. The spirit that moved the project was the same that opened the West and built a great Industrial Revolution. This spirit was based on a firm belief in American technology, industry, and democracy.
Chase is proud to be a part of this centennial observance of the opening of the Brooklyn Bridge, because we believe that that spirit remains the key to our nation's future.
The hundred years since the Bridge's opening have seen an extraordinary growth in our country. As the original engineers could build a bridge to last one hundred years-to carry traffic of a kind and amount unthinkable in 1883-so can we, with the same kind of perseverance and dedication, prepare for a sound and prosperous nation one hundred years into the future.
The message of the Bridge is that it can be done, and Chase is delighted to bring that message to all the people of America on behalf of the people of New York.
