DUST JACKET INTRODUCTION:
In this dazzling collection of 50 full-colour paintings, internationally acclaimed railway artist, Wentworth D. Folkins, brings the Canadian era of steam trains to thundering, throbbing life. From Newfoundland to British Columbia, he brilliantly depicts the now-vanished "Iron Horses" that welded Canada into one nation from the Atlantic to the Pacific.
Railroad enthusiasts will welcome Folkins' commitment to mechanical and historical accuracy. The "Moguls;' "Mikados," "Pacifics;' "Selkirks" and "Hudson" are rendered with uncompromising accuracy of detail. Even the company livery appropriate to every decade is authentic.
But Wentworth Folkins' paintings will be welcomed by those who know little or nothing about Canada's railroading history, for his compositions are far more than illustrations of trains. His paintings are a record of Canadian life, coast-to-coast, not so long ago. The way we were . .. in the Maritimes, in rural Quebec, in small-town Ontario, on the wheat-rich Prairies, in the rugged Rockies and in British Columbia on the shores of the Pacific. Wentworth Folkins re-creates a Canada that some of us knew, but that many more of us have only heard about from our parents.
This earlier Canada was still a small-town country when the majority of people had not yet drifted to the big cities ... and when even Montreal and Toronto retained something of a community flavour and ambiance. Wentworth Folkins has produced a portfolio of paintings that are a mirror for all of us. We look at his work and we see ourselves the way we were.
