THE SETTING OF THIS NOVEL IS Brooklyn and New York City from 1884 to the "Blizzard of '88," when New Yorkers dug themselves out from snow not quite so deep but more destructive than the "Great Snow of Christmas '47." It's first of all a rousing good novel of family life-and what a family. Incidentally it's a continuation of the fortunes of the Rogers family, members of a clan whose infectious charm and vibrant, American warmth made them favorite fiction characters to readers of CENTENNIAL SUMMER and BRIDGE TO BROOKLYN.
Several new members join the family in this novel, among them a fine, redheaded gentleman who was one of the first great underhand pitchers of the "Brooklyns--now yelept the Dodgers. Several incidents centered about him will be sheer joy to the Dodger fan, or to anyone who is a baseball enthusiast. Another newcomer is a pretty little actress called Ohio Ballow who captures straight-laced Henry in the middle of the "Great Blizzard of '88." And there's also a new marriage for Mrs. Rogers' fabulous sister Zena, who practices total war and captures a bewildered little man after dyeing her hair red.
