DUST JACKET INTRODUCTION:
Martin Burwash's Great Adventure: The Railroad Legacy of Stevens Pass is the ultimate book to be written about modern day railroading on the BNSF's Stevens Pass in Washington.
Chapter One explains why the Pass exists today. James J. Hill envisioned a railroad that would serve as a land bridge between the Orient and the Atlantic. Our story opens at the docks as another container ship arrives to be unloaded onto rail cars, just as Hill foresaw 130 years ago. The biggest obstacle on the Pass is a 7.9 mile bore under the Cascade Range which allows only one train per hour to pass, thus resulting in the biggest problem on Stevens Pass; gridlock. Because of Hill's dream and the tunnel, crews spend a great deal of time waiting their turn for the tunnel and frequently don't make the entire trip across the division, so the railroad turns to their "bullpen" and calls for the "Dog Catchers". Dog catchers are fresh crews that are sent all over the pass to relieve crews whose Hours of Service expired in some siding in amidst the gridlock. Throw in a couple of local freights to mess up the picture further and you get the idea about this chapter.
Chapter Two is a tour of the railroad between the Puget Sound in Seattle and the apple country in Wenatchee. The camera goes where few have ventured in this chapter. Where we can't drive, we walk, in snow and look under heavy brush for ancient ruins. We talk to one of the last one room school teachers and visit a grave yard in Leavenworth to learn about the town's past.
Chapter Three is the heart and soul of The Great Adventure. Five individuals tell a story which explains why they are part of the "Keepers of the Lore" on Stevens Pass.
Chapter Four defines the Adventure on Stevens Pass- Snow!
In the Epilogue, author Burwash reflects on what The Great Adventure means to him.
