The Grand Trunk Western Railroad has long appealed to rail fans all over the USA and Canada. It is part of a once magnificent Grand Trunk Railway System, which now of course is part of the Canadian National Railways. The GT and now the GTW have long had a history of being fair and honest with their customers and the people they have worked with. They operated steam for a longer period of time than most U.S. railroads.
The purpose of this book is to provide a pictorial review of the motive power, trains and train services as well as a capsul history of the early development of the Grand Trunk in the United States.
A number of the photographs used were extremely old, in some cases well over 75 years of age. There are a few instances of photos that have been used previously by this author. This was due to an absence of other photos of the same subject (passenger equipment) and as it was important that the subject be included, the photos were used.
Grand Trunk Western has been a very distinctive railroad with a Canadian flavor, another major point of interest. Ever since the 1920's, the company has been nearly identical with the color schemes and trademarks of the parent company. However, in 1971, that changed. Today we have GTW trains rolling down the track in a distinctive blue set off by red-orange trim and white lettering. It is a sign that the railroad is gearing up for the future, a railway that has one of the finest track structures in the U.S., and finally a company that knows how to serve the shipping and traveling public with the touch of the finest traditions. This is the GRAND TRUNK WESTERN RAILROAD.
