The "Berlin Sub-Division" was Canadian National's designation for the Portland-Island Pond section of the railway inherited through amalgamation of the old Grand Trunk Railway. This line has come full circle from the old Atlantic & St. Lawrence to being a part of the once largest Railway in the world, the Grand Trunk Railway of Canada, part of North America's longest system, the Canadian National. The Grand Trunk's Berlin Sub-Division is now an independent bridge line, the St. Lawrence & Atlantic.
The ceremonial spades of earth were turned for the Atlantic and St. Lawrence Railway at Portland 4 July 1846 -first day revenue service 5 July 1848 - opened to service to Island Pond 4 April 1853 - leased to the Grand Trunk of Canada 1 July 1853 - opened service to Montreal 18 July 1853 - inaugurated Portland to Chicago express 7 May 1860 - changed from broad to standard gauge 26 September 1874 - amalgamated into the Canadian National system 30 January 1923 - completed the A&StL stock sale to Canadian National in June 1945 - totally dieselized 21 June 1956 - sold to Emons Holding Corporation and became St. Lawrence and Atlantic 19 May 1989.
