INTRODUCTION
Places are valued for the stories we tell about them. This book tells stories about the place we call
El Granada in the hope that we may value even more this unique town on the San Mateo County coast.
Stories about places are called landscape histories. A landscape history looks at how the land, people
and time come together to make a place.
A landscape history uses stories found in old newspaper articles and tour books; in the memories of oldtimers and newcomers; and in documents such as maps, census reports, property deeds, tax records and lists of voters. It uses stories found in diaries, poems, letters and essays; in old and recent
photographs; and in advertisements.
A landscape history can be as personal as a guide book: the author shares observations in order to invite the reader to enter the landscape.
Landscape histories matter because every present landscape is an accumulation of past landscapes. Our roads follow old trails; our towns reflect old visions of community planning; our parks are shaded by trees valued generations ago.
Landscapes are like transparent overlays: each new landscape lies over the preceding one but doesn't quite obliterate it. Landscapes are in "perpetual transition"1; no final landscape is ever achieved. Our present landscape will be part of tomorrow's landscape history.
