For George Behrend, the railway systems of the world fall into two groups-the Great Western, and the others. Much of his life has been spent within sight and sound of it and even during the 1939-45 War, while serving overseas, he had a remarkable encounter with THE railway, as he relates in the chapter "Interlude in Italy". But then, the old Great Western always was remarkable.
This book is an evocation of that remarkability, that distinctive something which made the G.W.R. just what it was in the years which followed the Grouping. up to 1947, when it disappeared with its fellows into the limbo of British Railways-a necessary operation, perhaps, but none the less a saddening one. For some years after that, it is true that we could say, with Tennyson, that though much was taken, much remained, hut now the massive inroads of modernisation are rapidly obliterating the last remnants of that most individual of railways. So before it is too late, the author has put on record his recollections of what he, and many others, will always think of as Gone With Regret.
