DUST JACKET INTRODUCTION:
The White Pass and Yukon Route is a living narrow gauge which stretches over 110 scenic miles from Skagway, Alaska, through British Columbia, and to Whitehorse, Yukon Territory. Gold Rush Narrow Gauge is the story of how the railroad was built during the Klondike gold rush and still operates.
Riding this relic of the gold rush era, modern-day passengers enjoy plush combination cars. While the flavor of yesteryear remains, the railroad has been modernized and boasts a fleet of diesel locomotives. The line's almost unbelievable 3.9 per cent grades also remain, making its route among the steepest in the world.
Gold Rush Narrow Gauge details the problems of building the White Pass and Yukon Route over the rugged mountains where temperatures frequently drop to below zero. Its 25,000-word text is supplemented by more than one hundred pictures. These illustrations include photos of early and modern locomotives and cars as well as maps. There are also photos of the river boats the railroad once operated and of the ocean-going ships that link the narrow-gauge to Vancouver, B. C.
The book also describes how sourdoughs rode the narrow-gauge, its right-of-way carved on the side of mountains where engineers once thought it impossible to build a railroad. When the gold rush ended, the White Pass continued to serve the area. It became a vital link in Allied defenses in World War II and was used to construct the Alaskan Highway. It now carries materials to and from the Yukon Territory.
Although Gold Rush Narrow Gauge deals primarily with the White Pass and Yukon Route, it also discusses the discovery of gold and deals with Soapy Smith, "king" of the Skagway crime syndicate whose career ended only when railroaders arrived in the city.
This volume has been beautifully lithographed and bound in the tradition that has made its publisher, Trans-Anglo Books, renowned for quality.
