The author, lawyer by profession, but doing some history writing as an avocation, was intrigued, like every one else who seestherock piles inand aroundBreckenridge,Colorado, by the despoilation of the valleys and became interested in tracing the history of the gold dredging boats that operated there. He found that nine such dredges had been constructed in that area and had operatedduringtheperiod 1898-1942. This book is the result of his researches.
The County Records showed the ownership of the placer claims that were dredged and some of the history of the companies involved, but the everyday operations of the dredges could only he recalled through the weekly newspaper that was published in Breckenridge during this period, The Summit County Journal. The author read the Journal, as issued for about 44 years, to learn what the editor of the paper thought was Worth printing at the time.
Much was left to be desired in such reporting, but this book will give the reader an idea of how the dredge boats operated in the mountains of Colorado and will indicate some of the trials and tribulations of the companiestrying to operate such dredges at a profit. This hook is apparently the first one to introduce to the
General readerthecircumstances surrounding the gold dredging activities in the mountain states.
