Over 200 photographs
Glory Days of Logging is the fascinating pictorial history of life in the Big Woods-in British Columbia, Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, and Northern California. The story of the forgotten men and their methods of logging comes alive in a variety of rare photographs and interesting, informative text.
Here are the best photographs of a dozen famous collections: Davis and Benson rafts, river drives, hand logging, spar topping, big wheels in the pine, sawmills from 1890 to 1915, historical ox teams, tractors, flumes. The reader actually feels the old logging atmosphere in the rich copper halftone engravings-the only method of making true reproductions of such precious originals.
To complete the journey into the past, Ralph Andrews has selected features of human interest written by men who, like himself, lived with loggers-Stewart Holbrook, James Stevens, Paul Hosmer, Robert E. Swanson, and others. The material includes bunk house ballads, humorous sketches, and eyewitness accounts of work and life in the tall uncut.
In scouting the material for Glory Days in logging camps, lumber firm offices, libraries, universities, and official archives, Ralph Andrews found tremendous interest and cooperation. Industry and individual stepped in to help, and the result is excellent reader interest and organization.
Here is a fitting tribute to the vision, ingenuity, and determination of the pioneers of West Coast logging.
