THE GLORIOUS AGE OF STEAM
When Stephenson's steam-powered engine, Rocket, won the Rainhill locomotive trials in 1829, it heralded a glorious age for steam trains. This ground-breaking machine was light, fast and powerful and contained all the essential elements used in the majority of engines right up until the last ones were built in Britain in 1960.
This authoritative book is a celebration of that exciting and innovative era, a tribute to the railway's most glorious years. It traces the development of the steam locomotive from Rocket through its heyday during the nineteenth century right up to BR's Class 9F 2-10-0. Each engine is covered in detail, with design specifications, contemporary drawings and photographs, and superb colour artwork. A fascinating account of the engine's history is packed with key facts and feats and there is information on where you can see the locomotive in action today.
The new steam locomotives were able to move people and freight at unprecedented speeds. All over the world, tracks were laid at ferocious speed to keep up with demand, and rail
companies vied with each other to provide the fastest, most luxurious service. The Glorious Age of Steam evokes all the atmosphere and
excitement of this bygone age of steam travel and takes you on an illustrated tour of some of the world's most famous and spectacular journeys. Experience through the passenger's eyes the exhilarating approach from Bulawayo to the Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe, the perilously steep climb from Ecuador's coastal plains up into the high Andes, or the quieter pleasures of a gentle wander through the verdant valleys of Wales.
The pleasures and pains of life on the railways are also vividly described. Pen portraits bring to life the engine drivers, stationmasters and signalmen who took such pride in working with the trains, and dramatic accounts recall the disasters and accidents that befell them. Features on railway ephemera, such as posters and timetables, capture the essence of everyday working life.
The Glorious Age of Steam, containing over 300 rare photographs and drawings, will appeal to both casual enthusiast and serious devotee - anyone who looks back with affection to the time before diesel and electric engines took the romance out of the railway.
