Mining is now Canada's second most important primary industry, being exceeded only by agriculture in value of annual production. This booklet outlines briefly the more important features of the Dominion's mineral industry, and of its minerals. Information in more detail on any particular phase of the industry may be obtained by writing to the Director, Mines and Geology Branch, Department of Mines and Resources, Ottawa, Canada. The provincial governments also maintain departments from which information on their mineral resources may be obtained. In this connection, the attention of the reader is drawn to the fact that in Canada the actual administration of mineral resources rests with the provinces, who issue prospectors' licences, lease or grant mineral claims, and exercise the usual supervision over mining operations. The Dominion Government, except in the Yukon and Northwest Territories, confines its activities chiefly to the making of geological and topographical surveys for assisting in the discovery of mineral deposits, and of researches designed to assist in the commercial development of mineral deposits, and in the wider use of Canadian minerals. In addition, it assists in the development of export markets, and collects comprehensive and up-to-date material on all matters related to Canadian mining for the information of the miner, the industrialist, and the general public.
