When I first came to this country I was startled by American nineteenth century buildings; though widely traveled I had never seen more fanciful houses. I began to sketch, paint and photograph them, then went to the libraries to learn more about these houses and their builders. There was little in print on the subject then and most of that was derogatory. Some books warned the reader to shut his eyes to one and all of these Victorian "monstrosities" lest his taste and morals be corrupted.
I hope this book will serve as an antidote to long-entrenched clich.
It is not a work of formal scholarship. I have discovered no lost documents in archives or attics but have drawn freely on both nineteenth century sources and on the fast growing pile of research by present-day specialists on Americana. I am not an architectural historian and have avoided the intriguing vocabulary of that profession. There will be no further mention here of the trabeated versus arcuate systems of construction, machicolated stringcourses, splayed soffits, specked rubble, sconcheons, riprap walls, calf's-tongue moldings, cusped voussoirs, counterlobed archivolts and twisted astragals.
You will find here the equivalent of almost two hundred thousand words by the "one picture is worth a thousand words" count. I have made a most determined effort to present visual evidence from many parts of the country but exact geographical balance cannot be achieved; there are over twenty thousand communities in the United States and most of them have some buildings of the period.
