This is the story of Gilsoniteand the American Gilsonite Company its people and their efforts which have contributed to a widespread use of this mineral and its many by-products.
Gilsonite, once a mineralogical curiosity, is now the basis for an industry that makes an important economic contribution to the Uintah Basin of eastern Utah and to the Grand Valley of western Colorado.
Industrial science has been beneficially used in the Company's development. It involved devising new mining methods, designing new and better equipment, developing a solution to ore transportation, building a processing plant to produce petroleum products from a solid-petroleum raw material and fitting these together in a successful operating plan.
The Gilsonite story is interwoven with the history of the Old West, with innovation, with long hours of searching and with the courage to try the new.
