A wonderfully readable and incisive biography of David H. Moffat, the man who attempted the impossible -- building a standard gauge railroad across the Continental Divide through the Rocky Mountains. Despite fierce opposition from notable adversaries such as E. H. Harriman of the Union Pacific, he forged ahead and bored 33 tunnels to provide Denver with access to a transcontinental route. His amazing accomplishment, in the face of 4% grades, neverending battles with the snow, and topographical nightmares, made him the stuff of legend in Colorado although the final link, the Moffat Tunnel, was not completed until after his death. Illustrated throughout with black and white photos. With maps, including an oversized foldout one in the back.
