PREFACE
"Ghosts of Park County" is the third of a planned series of short books on the ghost towns and mining camps of Colorado - each book in the series being for a different county or group of counties.
Although there exists a voluminous amount of wonderful literature on the subject of Colorado ghost towns and mining camps, I have been continually frustrated in attempting to locate many of these places due to the inadequate descriptions or the incomplete maps which are provided. Consequently, I am publishing this series of books for the primary purpose of providing accurate locations, shown on topographic maps, to aid those of you who have shared my frustrations.
Since the United States Geological Survey, in their County Map Series, publishes topographic maps for all Colorado counties of interest to the ghost town hunter, I have decided to structure this set of books on a county by county basis to conform with these easily obtainable U.S.G.S. maps. The maps reproduced in this book are updated verions of those maps, and I gratefully appreciate the permission of the U.S.G.S. to reproduce their work.
The text of the books in this series contains information acquired from most of the more popular books on the subject, and does not include extensive outside research. Refer to the Bibliography for those to whom I am so greatly appreciative for their research efforts. I do not offer new insights to the Colorado ghost towns and mining camps which any serious student of the subject probably does not already know; I do, however, attempt to compile information from many different sources into one concise story and provide an accurate location on a good map so that you can enjoy visiting these monuments to the past as much as I have.
Throughout the series you will find many "facts" which, due to the obscurity of history, may not be totally factual. So, be cautious in accepting certain statements, especially dates and population figures.
A few brief words about the County Map Series ... A road shown as improved can be negotiated by most any vehicle, although vehicles with low clearance could experience problems in some places. Unimproved roads usually require sufficient clearance, and four-wheel drive is recommended but not always necessary. Jeep trails and pack trails are shown with the same symbol, but are usually labeled appropriately. Definitely plan on using a four-wheel drive vehicle for jeep trails. I have found that some of these trails are designed to accommodate narrow wheelbase (i.e. Jeep) vehicles, although a careful driver can travel these in a wider based vehicle such as a full-size Blazer (which happens to be the vehicle I standardly use). Note that the U.S.G.S. maps may not indicate Wilderness Area boundaries. These Wilderness Areas are restricted to motorized travel; their boundary outlines can be found accurately on maps obtained from the U.S.
