DUST JACKET INTRODUCTION:
When so many Americans got their first automobiles in the 1960s, they left the railroads behind them. The mighty rail system that had once been the vital artery of American travel and commerce soon began to wither. Many locomotives, both steam and diesel, which had spent their working lives hauling freight and people, now lie rusting in abandoned yards. Deserted depots and roundhouses host grass and weeds where rail tracks once gleamed.
In twenty-three unique features, GHOST TRAINS will capture the fascinating specters of America's once-mighty rail network. Bell's evocative images document rusting locomotives, prairie ghost towns bypassed by the line, abandoned stations and depots, and haunted railroad hotels. His poignant monochrome photographs are a moving tribute to a bygone era, when the railroad dominated the American landscape.
Bell's nostalgic images capture railroad scenes by both day and by night, and document many different aspects of railroad culture. Massive engines are posed with original railroad architecture and his shots capture the Art Deco splendor of stations like the Cincinnati Union Terminal. GHOST TRAINS is a must-have collection of great images that portray the beauty and nostalgia of the American railroad era.
James P. Bell is a photo-journalist in the great tradition of O. Winston Link. He has driven thousands of miles across North America to document the decaying remnants of our railroad past. In doing so, he has collected a portfolio of stunning and iconic images. Each of GHOST TRAINS's twenty-three features is accompanied by the author's own nostalgic narrative, detailing the locomotives, rolling stock, buildings, and the great characters of the lost railroads.
