DUST JACKET INTRODUCTION:
Finally, a definitive history of Georgia's rail history told in a clear and easy to read style. It covers the period from 1833 to 1933. The reader can easily follow the progression of each of the state's rail-lines as they evolved from their earliest beginnings. Some early rail companies flourished while others quickly floundered. The confusing financial manipulations that led to the creation of the Southern Railway in 1894, and the Central of Georgia Railway in 1895, are easily explained. Through the use of photos of artifacts, postcards, portraits, and maps the text comes alive. Names of many lesser known rail executives are used throughout and quite possibly, a reader will discover an early forebearer within the chapters. The title poignantly reflects the passage of many rail companies and their depots. This book will preserve a small part of our state's grand rail heritage.
Les Winn grew up close to the tracks of the Chicago & North Western Railway in Chicago. This was at a time when steam locomotives still operated over those tracks. Surprisingly, he never developed a fascination with those locomotives or the diesels that followed. Instead, he was attracted to the items used by the railroaders who worked on the trains.
The items range from kerosene hand lanterns used for signalling to the china and silver-plate set out by the stewards in the dining cars. However, it was not until he moved to Atlanta, that a sense of history began to merge with his attraction for rail artifacts. In 1985, while visiting the General locomotive at Kennesaw's Big Shanty Museum, he made a commitment to try to preserve not only railroad artifacts, but the history of the companies that produced them.
This book is the culmination of that commitment and represents almost ten years of research and the assemblage of artifacts specifically related to Georgia's early rail history. Although the book is finished, he continues to hunt for artifacts and information about Georgia's rail history.
