DUST JACKET INTRODUCTION:
The George Washington was the premier passenger train of the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway. While not provided with all of the services of First Class trains on some other railroads, The George was the epitome of elegance and grace, a train that embodied all the hallmarks of the colonial and revolutionary periods in American history.
From its inauguration in 1932 until about 1950 The George Washington was equipped with heavy weight Pullmans, coaches, and diners, and it is this version of the train that this book focuses on. It tells the full story of these conservatively elegant cars and the history of their service on The George. Of particular note is the fact that each Pullman and dining car was named for a person, place, or event that was significant in the life and career of the train's namesake, our country's First Citizen, and the history of each of those people, places, and events is briefly detailed.
Also covered are the history of the train itself, its motive power, and the experience of riding this remarkable train. The extensive appendices that address the George Washington's (and other C&O) cars make this book a must have reference for anyone interested in C&O mainline passenger operations.
