During the exhibition trip of the Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul gearless Passenger locomotive through the east, the General Electric Co. took the opportunity to run a number of tests on this locomotive over the Erie test track on May 19th, 1924. As a part of the days program tests were also included of a newly built 3000 volt multiple unit train, and demonstration of experimental under bridge current collection using both the standard design and the hornless pantograph. Engineers and operating men from many railroads witnessed the tests.
The electric locomotive is one of five 260 ton 3000 volt gearless units furnished to the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Ry. in 1919 and 1920. It has, therefore, been operated between 250,000 and 300,000 miles in daily service over the 2 percent grades of the Coast Divisions between Seattle, Tacoma and Othello, Washington.
Mr. R. Beeuwkes, Electrical Engineer for the Railway Co. was especially interested to have otheograph records made of this locomotive and the designer, Mr. A. F. Batchelder, took occasion to study carefully the riding qualities after this period of service.
