The story of the way successive engineers have responded to a wide variety of demands - from better hill-climbing capabilities to the ability to burn a different fuel - is part of the enduring fascination of the study of the steam locomotive.
Behind diverse solutions to specific problems lies a degree of commonality that can be traced back to Robert Stephenson's Northumbrian. With the important exception of the position of the cylinders, which were soon moved to the front of the locomotive, underneath or beside the smoke-box, Northumbrian incorporated most of the principles that remained fundamental to the steam locomotive.
