INTRODUCTION
This book is intended as a reference for the use of owners and operators of gas and gasoline engines, and is written in plain, non-technical language so that the contents will be available in times of trouble without deep study.
Particular attention has been paid to the construction and adjustment of the accessory appliances, such as the ignition system and carbureter, as these parts are the most liable to derangement and as a rule are the least understood parts of the engine. The illustrations that accompany the descriptive matter are not diagrams of obsolete devices, nor arbitrary sketches of laboratory apparatus, but are accurate reproductions of actual modern engines and show the parts as they are actually built by well known makers.
It is the belief of the author that diagrams and illustrations convey a more definite idea of the working of the various parts than reams of descriptive writing, and for this reason the "pictures" have been introduced at every possible point where they would render the matter more intelligible.
The trouble chart makes the gist of the matter contained in the book, instantly accessible, whether the owner has read the entire book or not, and the author is certain that this feature will be appreciated by the man whose engine has gone on a "strike," and who has no inclination to read the entire book to locate the cause. To obtain a knowledge of the gas engine and its parts, the book may be read through in the ordinary way of reading, as the matter is arranged in a systematic manner.
When trouble arises with your engine consult the Trouble Chart which is located in the last chapter in the book, then follow down the column under the head of Symptoms until the description tallies with the actions of your engine. When the symptom is located follow across the page to the next column ("causes"), and try each suggestion in order until the trouble is located.
The section devoted to Installation will prove of value to the gas engine owner who is interested in having his engine operate under the best conditions and at the least expense for fuel and repairs. The best engine built cannot give satisfactory service if improperly installed, and many an engine has been condemned when the real fault lay in the piping or foundations.
For the best results the instructions contained in this section should be followed to the letter, as the data contained therein is the result of many years experience.
JOHN B. RATHBUN.
