Altho the region's local transportation is now by bus, the city was once the center of several interurban and local street railways. People could travel from Gary to LaPorte, Chesterton, Valparaiso, Hobart, Crown Point, and Hammond on interurban cars operated by Gary Railways, Inc., or its predecessors.
