Introduction
In this book, one of a series of five on steam locomotives of the four Groups and British Railways, the subject encompasses the Great Western Railway from 1 902 onwards. This date is by no means randomly chosen, being one that marked the principal watershed in G.W. locomotive design, wherein a typically Victorian engine philosophy changed to totally modern methods and in so doing profoundly influenced British railway locomotive development for the remainder of the steam era.
The title Great Western Railway exudes a special aura for railway enthusiasts which remains undiminished with the passage of time, whose characterful products continue to be the most modelled by railway miniaturists. Three reasons could well account for this phenomenon. First the unbroken 113-year existence of the company as a distinct and unfragmented entity led to evolution of characteristic working methods and techniques. As a consequence of the foregoing, there also arose intense pride of association on the part of the staff and servants; and thirdly the consistent quality and unique appearance of G.W. locomotives, from the elegance of the top-link fleet, caparisoned with copper and brass for decades after other railways had abandoned such decoration, to the humblest of branch line tank engines.
From the very start the G.W.R. manifested an image that appealed to the public at large, not simply in the speed and regularity of its services but also in its efforts to cater for the needs, however small, of its customers; it was an integral part of the lives of generations of people. The pride engendered in company personnel was hardly unique- most major railways were objects of pride and loyalty- but in part due to its longevity the G.W. R. preserved that loyalty to a remarkable degree. The upheaval of Grouping in 1923,  in which its erstwhile competitors were all materially altered and eventually lost their individual identities, had little effect on the G.W.R.; beyond absorption of several minor railways in and around Wales, affairs continued without change. Thus, unlike the other three Groups which had to forge brand-new corporate images from the often-conflicting constituent companies, the G.W.R. had a tradition unbroken from 1832 till Nationalisation in 1948.
