ABOUT THIS BOOK
Current interest in the environment and in pollution problems has led to renewed interest in railways because of their potential contribution to the quality of life. Within their range fast and economical transport is offered with minimal noise, dirt and hazard. This book for the general reader describes the impact of modern technology on the transport mode in non-technical terms and sets out the possibilities now within reach. The term railway is liberally interpreted and all forms of guided transport are examined and briefly assessed, including hovertrains, magnetic levitation lines, evacuated tubes and other fresh ideas now being put forward. Both the new modes and the orthodox railway are placed in a general transport organisation background.
Motive power, signalling (soon to be called command and control), high speed trains and unorthodox transport systems are looked at in turn. The author describes present advanced practice-in all parts of the world and where necessary briefly relating how the practice was developed-before showing where the new techniques are leading. Both the orthodox railway and the unorthodox modes will be fully automated for intensive traffic in future, with driverless trains controlled from widely dispersed centres. Just how this automation will be attained is set out here and the results noted.
