My initial intention was to compose this book as mainly a narrative, with a few typical schedules and consists for the major trains. This concept soon showed to be impractical, as train names
and numbers varied from year-to-year and railroad-to-rail. There are so many variables to consider in writing a detailed account of Midwest-Florida train service that by necessity I included schedules and lists of cars, which are not only easier to read, but pack much more information per square inch of paper. I have striven to present what I consider to be the most important facts, which should proanswers to most readers' questions.
FONTS
When reading train schedules, the portion of the schedule of the featured train is in a heavier, different font than that describing connecting service.
WHICH CITIES ARE "MIDWEST"?
Midwest-Florida passenger train services fanned out in waves over time, starting in the last third of the nineteenth century, when Cincinnati was as far as one was able to travel on a through train from Florida. Around 1900-1910 through train service was extended farther, to cities such as Chicago and Kansas City. Concurrently, a myriad of sleeping car routes increased the number of cities where travelers could board a Pullman that was surrounded by 'snow and cold and remain in that car until they stepped off in warmth and sunshine in Jacksonville, Sarasota or Miami. In order to show this progression, I have considsome important southern cities such as Nashville and eastern cities such as Cincinnati to be "Midwest?' Cover-
