We have always felt that the lettering or markings on railroad equipment is a very interesting and complete study in itself. The huge file of prints, photos and other illustrative material that we maintain is mute amplification of this fact. Such material is very important to us in the pursuit of our desire to offer model railroaders the best in realistic lettering transfers.
While there may be some who care little about duplicating actual railroad markings on their model equipment, the majority of modellers are definitely concerned about the total appearance of their models. It is for this reason that Champion Decal Co. manufactures the finest lettering transfers available, including with each complete set of freight car decals, a lettering plan or diagram to guide the modeller in lettering his equipment. Lettering plans included in this Book Number Two depict, for the most part, a series of cars found along right-of-ways from coast to coast.
It is intentional that only freight car lettering plans are included, inasmuch as most pikes contain, prototypically, a great variety of freight cars, but are limited to one or only a few road names for locomotive and passenger equipment. It is our contention that the modeller is familiar with the locomotives and passenger cars of his favorite road, or has access to photos of same. Consequently, our efforts have been confined to freight car lettering plans.
Car numbers shown on the freight car lettering plans are actual numbers used by the railroad for that particular car, or did exist at one time in the past when the cars were painted and lettered in the manner indicated by the plan.
Beneath each plan, initials and numbers are used in the event you wish to procure lettering for a particular car. By comparing the numbers listed in our current catalog you may, through the use of this handy Plan Book, now see exactly what design you are ordering. HO gauge numbers are indicated on the left side of the plan and 0 gauge numbers on the right.
Needless to say, a great deal of time and effort has been expended to make these plans. It is our fondest hope that you, the modeller, will use them and benefit through the self-satisfaction imparted by the knowledge that your models are lettered like the "real thing".
