INTRODUCTION
This is the first of a series of books about the Pittsburgh & Lake Erie's freight equipment and covers a type of car that was critical to the operation of the steel industry, whose tremendous volume of traffic enabled the railroad to earn the nickname, The Little Giant. Gondola cars hauled raw materials to, moved semi-finished products between and moved finished products from the mills served by P&LE. Serving the steel industry was the heart of the P&LE's operations throughout its existence and these cars were so important to both the railroad and the industries it served that we decided to make this book the first in our series. It is primarily based on original company documentation and interviews with former P&LE officials. This was supplemented with additional information gleaned from railroad publications and interviews with historians.
