It might be interesting first to review briefly some of the factors that have contributed to the development of the modem freight ear. In the early days of railroading every road built its own cars and there were as many kinds as there were roads. However, the need of standards, so that ears of one road could be interchanged with another, were soon found to be necessary. This led to the organization of the Master Car Builders Association which later became a part of the Association of American Railroads or as better known, the A.A.R. This Association has, since its inception, forlated the various car designs as well as made recommendations for bettering safety, increasing operating efficiency and the control of cars.
Prior to 1918 car bodies were built of wood and steel was used sparingly in the underframe, for buffers, end sills and only where unusual strength or protection against damage made its use imperative. Cars ranged in length from 25 to 38 feet. While a few of these old timers may still be in service there are few of them that have not been altered or rebuilt. When you see an old ear, look for the date which shows when it was new or built. Most of the dates you see will be after 1918.
