ABOUT THE BOOK:    This is the second book in our sustained effort to examine North America's massive freight car fleet in color. The series will try to avoid re-using images already shown in the road-specific Color Guides produced by Morning Sun Books (although a repeat or two will surely sneak in). The first three volumes use Paul C. Winters' wonderful images by taking the best from the appropriate volumes of the five-volume 2, 600-photo companion ebooks entitled Vintage Freight Cars.
The late Paul C. Winters was a serious model railroader in the early 1960s. To add more realism, he began to shoot color slides of freight cars passing through the several large yards around his Columbus, Ohio home operated by B&O, N&W, NYC, and PRR. While naturally drawn to the flashy equipment and unusual cars, he also did not hesitate to shoot the weathered workhorses, unusual flatcar loads and equipment from faraway lines. In the course of his 20-plus years of freight car photography, he recorded something from almost every road and private carrier operating between 1960-80, including the earliest output of newly-merged roads like BN, PC, SCL, CR, and others. Paul ceased shooting slides around 1980 as his eyesight failed him.
Almost all of Paul's slides are unmarked and, while we could attempt educated guesses at their locations, it could result in mistakes. We can state with certainty, however, that the majority of the slides were shot in or around Paul's hometown of Columbus, Ohio, but he also made significant trips to St. Louis, Chicago, and Minneapolis and enjoyed spending time at Marion, Ohio. Each of these cars is a detailed story in itself, but our purpose here is to merely get Paul's work out there for researchers and freight car fans alike. In general, slides are presented in reporting mark alphabetical order accompanied by the slide processing date.
