Swift motor buses glide through the streets of Fort Wayne and little remains to suggest the once comprehensive electric railway and streetcar system that served the city. Occasionally, a rail can be seen peering from the pavement in the city and in the country grass-covered embankments remain as reminders of the interurban lines that radiated in five directions. These are now milestones in the distinguished ninety year history of Fort Wayne's modern transit system.
If this history had been undertaken before 1947, much valuable information, now lost forever, might have been easily gathered. Unfortunately, in the seperation of the power and transit facilities o large amount of data was destroyed as it had no current value. No comprehensive study of the company had ever been compiled and no complete history has ever been written. As many available sources as possible were used for this history.
The fine co-operation of many individuals should not go unrecognized. Foremost of these is Mr. Donald H. Walker, President of the progressive Fort Wayne Transit, Inc., who originally proposed the gathering together of all the facts of the firm's history. Herb Harnish aided in gathering details and is responsible for ninety percent of the photographic reproductions. Many of these were rescued from badly faded prints. Mr. E. A. Luhmon and the Indiana & Michigan Electric Company generously loaned old records and furnished statistics. The Fort Wayne Public Library staff was most helpful and patient in the use of newspaper micro-films. Mr. Roy M. Bates, local historian, gave considerable valuable help as did Mr. Daniel Reibel, present director, and Mr. Richard Haupt, former director, of the Allen County - Fort Wayne Historical Society.
Many others contributed information and gave invaluable aid which has been much appreciated. The following individuals were kind enough to provide pictures, augmenting those already in the Bradley - Harnish Collection. However, as the same pictures were, in some cases, received from different persons, individual photo credits are not given.
