In the case of the New Haven system, which was to control almost all the rest of the New England railroads, the break at 1900 comes on the eve of the presidency of C. S. In that second volume an attempt will be made to discuss at greater length the economic forces which made themselves felt in railroad combination in this region in the hundred-year period from the late 1830's to the late 1930's. The present volume presents in detail the basic material for sixty of these one hundred years. It is concerned with the building up of the present-day systems.
