DUST JACKET INTRODUCTION
Here is a carefully-researched but evocative memorial to many miles of forgotten railways, mainly created in Birmingham and the Black Country to intensify and exploit the Industrial Revolution - and an invitation to remember them: in fireside comfort, or by looking over bridges, tracing their routes or perhaps walking linear parks created from several trackbeds.
Besides one unquestionable main line (Birmingham Snow Hill-Wolverhampton Low Level) and one which had less claim to the title (the northern tip of the Oxford Worcester & Wolverhampton between Dudley and Wolverhampton), there were branch lines, mineral lines, branches to canal interchanges (once an important feature of the West Midland transport scene).
Today their trackbeds lie under the shadow of gasholders and motorway viaducts, or beside new shopping centres and expressways or provide pathways, official and casual, between house, shops and schools. Planners have made extensive use of old railway land, wielding it into new landscapes.
Beside the disused routes at the West Midlands heart, there are a host in North Staffordshire, where 'The Knotty' established a railway atmosphere as distinctive as that of the local scene in the Potteries. Here trackbeds have been adapted into walkways as part of some of Britain's most ambitious land reclamation schemes. And there is the story of a remote valley, where people refused to have a railway back.
