In 1867, Rockefeller left the grain business and, with associate Samuel Andrews, entered the oil business. Finding they needed more capital, Rockefeller approached Flagler and suggested he borrow money and become an equal partner. The Rockefeller, Andrews, and Flagler enterprise soon incorporated as Standard Oil. Standard Oil made millionaires of all three - a boon especially for Flagler, who needed the funds to pay for the treatment of his gravely ill wife, Mary.
The Flaglers visited Florida in winter 1878 and the warmth and humidity proved an effective treatment for Mary's consumption. She eventually passed away upon their return a few years later, but Florida had more in store for Henry. He came to recognize that the state, with its climate and pristine beaches of white sand, could compete with other locations in the Caribbean and Europe. Being part of the U.S. mainland, it was much easier to reach for American vacationers.
