From time immemorial, man has used symbols to represent his principles, allegiances and aspirations. Foremost among these symbols have been flags-the standards and banners, the pennants and guidons, the gonfalons and streamers and ensigns.
The ancient Persians bore a standard showing the sun and assigned their bravest men to guard it. The Roman emperors carried a banner of purple silk richly embroidered with gold. The kings of England flew their national banner. The North American Indians carried poles fledged with feathers from the wings of eagles. Whatever the shape or color or device, the flag was the sacred symbol of dedication to a cause . . . of loyalty to one's fellows . . . of devotion to one's country . . . and often a symbol of worship for a Supreme Being.
Many flags of Europe have flown on the North American continent. The cause of American Liberty gave rise to a burst of flag designs. With these flags our forefathers expressed their evolving thirst for freedom, their growing determination to achieve self-government, their dream of becoming an independent nation. From these evolved a single national emblem; the Flag of the United States of America, with thirteen alternating red and white stripes, and white stars on a blue field.
Find here the stirring history of this land as viewed by some of the flags that have flown over it. Study here some of the banners brought to these shores by explorers and colonists, the flags that were unfurled when the nation was born, when it grew, when it suffered in its wars. Salute with us the red, white and blue symbolizing courage, purity and justice-the honored symbol of a great, powerful, yet humble nation-a nation dedicated now, as always, to the ideals of self-government, equality and freedom.
