Who was Henry Flagler?
-Flagler's life exemplifies the American Dream, a true rag-to-riches story.
-Flagler was a co-founder of Standard Oil and John Rockefeller's closest associate during the company's early years.
-Flagler directed the rebates, drawbacks, and contracts with railroads which brought sharp criticism of Standard-and also brought it to monopolistic power.
-Flagler gave Carrere and Hastings-the architects who later designed the New York Public Library, the old New York Metropolitan Opera House, and the U.S. Senate office building-their first job, his Hotel Ponce de Leon.
-Flagler established Palm Beach and West Palm Beach as resort communities when he built his Florida East Coast Railway.
-In similar fashion, Flagler "founded" Miami, formerly only a frontier outpost with one family on each side of the river.
-Flaglee created the "eighth wonder of the world," the Key West Extension of his Florida East Coast Railway.
-The "Flagler DivorceaLaw," passed in 1901, created a furor in Florida politics and New York society.
-According to the Guiness Book of World Records (1967), Mrs. Henry M. Flagler "the chatelaine of Whitehall, her husband's $300,000 establishment in Palm Beach, Florida, in the era 1902-14 never wore any dress a second time. Her closets were nonetheless mothproof."
-Flagler's estate enabled Robert Bingham to buy the Louisville Courier-Journal.
