The writer of Luke's gospel described his work as being a "treatise of

all that Jesus began both to do and to teach until He was taken up." This book is an account of what a band of His followers began to do in the century between 1872 and 1972.

It has been possible to include only a few of the happenings of one hundred years and to mention only a few of the persons who had a part in them. Much was done of which no tangible record remains. All who have witnessed in this time and place have recorded the real history of First United Methodist Church; any written account must be inadequate.

A substantial part of the Centennial history was taken from "First Methodist Episcopal Church, a Chronicle of Progress through the Years," written by William H. Newcomb and published in 1939. It has been supplemented by church records, files of Huntington newspapers and personal recollections of many persons. Special thanks are due the present church staff, Mrs. Theodore P. Lallance, Robert F. Knight and the late Mrs. (Ina Beckner) Knight and the Reverend Jesse Earl whose earlier research made possible the inclusion of information about all of the ministers of the church.
