The railway age was born with the opening of the Stockton & Darlington line in Britain in 1825. At first the new form of transport had plenty of opponents- Farmers protested that noisy trains would make their cows dry up and ruin the hunting; doctors testified that passengers would catch tuberculosis in tunnels and gout sufferers would endure agonies on steep gradients- But the country needed railways and, by 1850 Britain had 6658 miles of track and all the elements of its modern railway system.
Britain also provided the capital, skill and labour to build railways in other countries- Five thousand British navvies worked on one of the first French lines and Britain provided the locomotive for Germany's first line - and its driver. By 1850 the United States had 9072 miles of track and, in 1869, the Pacific railway between Omaha and California was completed - despite blizzards, floods, marauding Indians and the blandishments of whisky and painted women-
This lavishly illustrated book captures all the atmosphere of a century which saw the beginnings of the golden age of steam.
