Rick Baumgartner, staff artist for The Huntington Advertiser, spent six months researching and writing the 18-part "First Families of Huntington" series published weekly in the Advertiser from Oct. 28, 1976 through March 24, 1977.
Although far from a definitive coverage of all early Huntingto-nians or a genealogical tracing of individual families, the series was designed to bring to life a sampling of those who contributed much to the founding of the city and its growth during the last 25 years of the 19th century, and who otherwise were highly conspicuous, influential and colorful in the mainstream of daily life here 100 years ago.
It also should be noted that many of the personal incidents and anecdotes contained in some of the stories were gleaned through interviews with family descendants, relatives and friends and are subject to minor errors which often result when one recalls oral history and events of years past.
