These are used because the sources from which they came are scarce and difficult of access, and because our present viewpoint of coal is vastly different from the one of much earlier days. The historical part of the work is in the earlier pages, the tables which record the growth of the industry are in the later ones, so that they can be used separately by those whose interests are divided.
