A MICHIGAN-CALIFORNIA PHOTO ALBUM - CONCLUSION
BY Mallory Hope Ferrell
THE EARLY HISTORY of what became the Michigan-California Lumber Company in California's High Sierra appeared in the FINESCALE RAILROADER 2005 LOGGING, MINING & INDUSTRIAL ANNUAL and comprised over fifty pages. The saga of the narrow gauge line, with emphasis on its
locomotives and rolling stock, now continues.
AMERICAN RIVER LAND & LUMBER The logging operation, located southwest of Lake Tahoe in the northern Mother Lode mining country, began in the late 1880s. Huge stands of sugar pine grew on both sides of the American River's South Fork. The American River Land & Lumber Company formed in 1889 and, by the following year, operations on the south side of the river canyon were in full swing. The logging soon moved to Slab Creek on the north side of the canyon, along the Georgetown Divide. Timber went into the river and floated downstream to a sawmill at Folsom.
