FOREWORD BY THE CHAIRMAN OF LONDON TRANSPORT
WHEN the Hampstead Tube was opened fifty years ago it was proclaimed as `the last link' in London's underground railway system. At the time, that was a reasonable thing to say; and Mr Lee shows in this book how wise as well as venturesome our predecessors were in their planning. The three new tubes of 1906 and 1907 took the strain of London's travel requirements, and with the extensions that were made in the years between the wars they did all, and more than all, that their promoters had hoped. We have good reason to be grateful for the pioneering risks that they accepted.
The audacities of one generation become the necessities of the next. We face a situation today which is in many ways similar to that which confronted London during the Edwardian decade. A new tube link across the heart of London-the Victoria Line-needs to be built. It is vital for the life of the capital city that more traffic should be taken off the streets. We shall have to find ways and means of building the Victoria Line. It will be a big undertaking, but the story recounted in the following pages is an example to encourage us.
