This roster generally follows the format of the 1976 "All Time Nickel Plate Diesel Roster'.'
Each NKP locomotive has its own entry, including road number, builder's number, date of delivery or original service, original assignment, and disposition. The N&W date is the date the unit was repainted -- some units were renumbered while retaining NKP paint while others were renumbered and repainted simultaneously. Units not having this date were either retired prior to the merger or were retired without having N&W numbers and paint applied.
One minor change has been made. Units have been grouped together by model, and model listings are arranged by the lowest-numbered unit of each model. Thus, NW2s, GP9s and RSlls are listed together, though each model had representatives in two separate number series.
Units are grouped by class within each listing. The post-1951 class is listed first, and the pre-1951 class follows in parenthesis if applicable. The pre-1951 class is related to the Chesapeake & Ohio/Pere Marquette system and is not particularly informative as to locomotive characteristics. The reclassification designated units by builder, service, horsepower, and order, and resembled systems used on other roads.
Dispositions are as complete as we are aware. Readers will probably be familiar with most abbreviations used; an exception might by NIM (Naparano Iron and Metal of Newark, New Jersey). The dates of sale to scrappers are shown if known, although individual units may have remained on the scrapper's property for months before being dismantled. The final disposition is not known for a few units listed as "retired.."
We hope that, as the Nickel Plate's diesel era ends, this roster will give it new perspective and demonstrate to friends old and new its unique character.
