Adapting to British Rail's unique rail network throughout England, Scotland, and Wales, Britain by BritRail follows the format of its predecessor, Europe by Eurail, by adhering to the time-proved base city, day excursion format. Because of its adaptability, London has been selected as the base city for day excursions within England and Wales. The capital of Scotland, Edinburgh, with Glasgow as an alternative, serves as a base of operations for day excursions northward into the Highlands.
Readers are assured that everything written was learned through the personal research and experiences of Britain by BritRail staff members. Our pledge to check, revise, and improve each edition continues.
Ferry crossings from Britain to Ireland and to the continent of Europe form a very important part of travel within the British Rail system. Consequently, several chapters describing the various ferry crossings are a permanent part of Britain by BritRail's format.
Our determination not to include British Rail services within the pages of Europe by Eurail has proved wise. Reader surveys and passenger interviews aboard Eurail and BritRail trains since 1978 have convinced us that readers appreciate the separate formats.
